What URL?! is the Apple Launcher of the Internet. It grabs URLs easily through drag and drop (or cut and paste), juggles as many windows as you can handle, and launches them with a no-brainer double-click. Browse through your entries with balloon help, view them by date last visited or most times visited, and use it to open your URLs in the programs you choose, thanks to Internet Config.
The authors (or at least Noah) recommends:
Anarchie for FTP
Newswatcher for NEWS
Netscape for WWW
BBEdit for Editing
These all use drag-and-drop and integrate with What URL?! very well.
The two buttons in the window are Get Info (on the left) and New URL (on the right) -- both accessable through a keyboard shortcut or through the menu bar. You will only need to use New URL if you want to make an entry from scratch within WU?!. When using a drag aware program like Netscape, Newswatcher, or Anarchie, you can simply drag items into URL?! to have them added in. When not using a drag-aware program like Eudora or Mosaic, you can highlight, copy, and paste the items to have them added in. Then use Get Info to adjust the Title that is shown through the window, and the Comments that remind you just what you liked about it.
The "padlock" button on the bottom prevents new entries (either by command or by drop, handy if you have lots of windows and don't want drops to go to the wrong ones) and prevents deleting entries. It will however allow links' dates and hits to be updated. The red "!" you will occasionally see is to remind you that the window has been changed and should be saved.
The window can be sorted on Title, Location, Date (of last launch), # of Hits, and Label (Labels are not implemented yet).
Some user interface stuff hasn't been completed yet. This includes minor things like clicking in a zoom box won't resize to display everything inside the window. Also, having a saved window position offscreen (from a higher resolution screen) won't automatically move it back onscreen (you can manually stack it back onscreen with the stack windows command (thanks, Éric!)). This will all be fixed come beta time. Also, getting an error while opening a file results in a bunch of exception dialogs, not one in plain english.
Requirement testing just hasn't come into play but it would be interesting to hear how it behaves when it's missing something. The '020/color requirements might make the program bug out if it can't find them, but hopefully most people will read the requirements list. >:)
Check out the apple menu... You can reach us that much easier now!
** Please check the web page for futher information and the latest versions.
Again, the requirements are:
• Internet Config 1.1 or greater
Can I stress this enough? Without Internet Config this program will NOT work.
If you don't have it yet (why not?), grab it at <ftp://ftp.share.com/pub/internet-configuration/>.
BTW: WU?! is built with the latest IC (1.2), so if there is a problem using 1.1, please let us know!
• at least 512 KB of available RAM, though 600kb is recommended.
• 68020, 030 or 040 processor (LC versions are fine) or PowerPC processor. WU?! will not run on 68000 systems.
• System 7.0 or later.
• for PowerPC systems, the Object Support Library, which is part of system System 7.5. For earlier systems, the user must have installed the ObjectSupportLib extension. This is included.
• Drag-and-Drop is highly recommended. It is included in 7.5, and can be used in 7.1 - see Apple's support site for the extension. <http://www.support.apple.com/>
Version History
1.0a5
NM & JC
• Added hit & date tracking, and added label support in the entry structure (not implemented yet).
• Changed file format structure. Old documents must be saved in a5 to gain the new format. a5 files are NOT backwards compatable.
• Added View By features. Documents can be sorted on Title, Location, Hits, Dates, and Labels. Windows default to Title (the most useful). This state is not saved yet.
• Added new windows menu, keyboard control of windows, and menu window selection. Menus also track modified windows by underlining the titles.
• Added new about box.
• Added mailto and http shortcuts into apple menu.
• Added new button graphics to complement Aaron better (and to just look nicer).
• Removed URLs Menu: Add URL became New URL (U), Change URL became Get Info (I), and Delete URL became Clear in the Edit menu!
• Keyboard navigation (Arrows/Enter)
1.0a4
JC
• Fixed interwindow drag and drop. Dragging to the finder will create a text clipping that also retains the other flavors, making it possible to import it back into WU?!. A private and public clipboard has been implemented.
• The first PPC native WU?! is born.
NM
• Fixed minor bug where the about box would crash.
• Fixed minor glitch where drag rectangles would be misplaced.
• Added Kent Jenkins' new icon variants.
1.0a3
NM
• Added icons to windows to show link types. So far, entries _must_not_ be delimited by <>'s for WU to recognize it.
• Added saved window position
• Added zoom window into menu for the time being, until auto position works.
• Added basic printing code. It prints, but only the window contents. No links yet, but very very soon.
1.0a2
NM
• Fixes a sorting problem where if the data moved into the window had the exact same title as another entry in that window the program would hang.
1.0a1
NM
• Initial offering to the world
